Is your driver’s license about to expire? No need to hurry, as the Land Transportation Office has implemented an automatic extension for licenses that are expiring from April 3, 2023, until April 1, 2024.
This move is another result of LTO’s problems with the shortage of plastic cards used in printing driver’s licenses. LTO Chairman Vigor Mendoza said that the extension is valid until April 1, 2024, or until the plastic card shortage has been fixed, whichever comes first.

This means that motorists will not get penalties if they fail to renew their expired licenses within the said time frame.
The LTO has been issuing paper-based licenses since April as the plastic card shortage resulted in over 1.7 million backlogs.
Another solution the LTO rolled out is the Electronic Driver’s License, which works as an alternative if ever a motorist is apprehended.
The delay was due to the temporary restraining order imposed by a Quezon City court against the delivery of the plastic cards due to concerns raised by the losing bidder in the procurement process of the said plastic cards.
