As the Philippine government continues on its urban development projects, South Korean firm Hyundai Engineering and Construction (E&C) has won the bid for a railway construction project worth $1.33 billion.
Certainly, a large undertaking that could cement the company’s reputation in the Philippines for years to come upon completion, Hyundai E&C announced the notice of award (NOA) it had received for the project on Sept. 18, 2022.
The project specifically aims to build Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Philippine Southern Urban Railway from the Philippine Department of Transportation. With a length that spans 56 kilometers, the railway will link Manila to Calamba, Laguna.
While Hyundai E&C will only be responsible for constructing three of the prospected nine stations, part also of the project is the establishment of nine ground stations as well as a 32-kilometer-long viaduct. Per estimate, the project is projected to finish in 57 minutes from start to finish.
Furthermore, Hyundai E&C will supervise all constructions except for some foundational works, which will be carried out by Dong-Ah Geological Engineering. However, the South Korean firm will be getting the lion’s share of the project—or 90 percent of it—at $1.2 billion.
