Long before 5G wireless technology even hits the mainstream, Samsung has already set their eyes to the next big thing — 6G network.
As per an unnamed Samsung executive, the South Korean tech giant is already in the early stages of developing 6G. It’s said that their telecommunications technology team have already expanded to do research on 6G network.
Samsung is even building a new research center in the southern part of Seoul. This is where R&D for the 6G network, as well as other things like artificial intelligence and robotics will take place.
However, don’t expect Samsung quickly to come up with a 6G technology in the next few years. If you remember, Huawei stated that they have started developing 5G way back in 2009.
It’s been ten years since and the only 5G-capable devices that we have are the updated versions of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, Lenovo Z6 Pro, OPPO Reno, and other high-end and very expensive smartphones.
Chances are, 6G capable devices will not hit until the 5G network matured and be a standard feature even in low-end devices.
Still, Samsung’s move to be a pioneering by starting early on working on 6G is a good look for them in the long run. It will also greatly benefit us, consumers, as 5G devices will eventually go down in price as a successor comes along — much like what we expect to happen on 4G anytime soon.
