Are you using GCash as a mode of payment when ordering on Shopee? Well, here’s some bad news for you.
We’ve spotted a notification from the Shopee app saying that they will start charging a 2% handling fee upon checkout on orders that are paid using GCash, the biggest e-wallet service in the Philippines. This is an increase from the 1% fee that it started charging late last year.

This new rule applies to all GCash payment options: from the standard GCash pay now function; GCash’s buy-now-pay-later feature called GCredit, and lastly, GGives which lets you borrow money for staggered repayments.
This new rule will take effect starting February 13, 2023.

Shopee could be looking for new ways to make money, hence the fee increase. Also last year, the e-commerce website laid off a number of its employees to “optimize” its operations as it suffered a USD 931 million loss in Q2 of 2022. The company even started imposing a 1% charge for e-wallet cash-ins.
