Shopee is now charging 1% handling fee for GCash payments

From November 1, Shopee users who use GCash for paying orders are now charged a 1% “handling fee.”

Shopee told users about the change through an in-app notification. This is an improvement over previous changes which were never officially announced (like the no voucher stacking).

Orders paid via GCash were previously free, but it seems like Shopee is still looking for more ways to generate more revenue to improve its balance sheet. This is in addition to the cash-in fees recently added to transfers from e-wallets to ShopeePay.

Over a month ago, Shopee Philippines laid off some of its employees to “optimize” its operations after it reported a $931 million loss in Q2 of 2022.
