Globe Telecom is shifting its focus towards prepaid home fiber.

As stated by Globe CEO Ernest Cu in an email shared by Bloomberg, the company is setting its sights on expanding the usage of its network by providing fiber connectivity via prepaid fiber products. The push for prepaid is in response to the “nearing saturation” of the postpaid broadband segment, according to Cu.

A launch for a new prepaid home fiber service is slated for the second quarter this year. The company will also be improving its community-based WiFi service, which already has 600 hosts nationwide.

The focus on prepaid home fiber services is also made in anticipation of the launch of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband service, which recently launched for enterprise users. A representative to Starlink’s local partner in the Philippines said household services will be available in late 2024.

According to Cristina Ulang, a strategist for First Metro Investment Corp., Globe’s prepaid move could lead to a price war in the market, but it may take some time to gain momentum.

The home broadband and wireless data market in the country saw rapid growth for the past two years, mainly because of the shift towards remote work and online education amid the global health crisis. However, high inflation rates have forced consumers to spend less on data services and more on necessities like food.
