With rival telecom company Globe taking the lead on the number of mobile subscribers, PLDT is poised to close the gap, following a 10 percent increase in net income in H1 2023.

During the H1 2023 earnings briefing conducted in Makati, PLDT President and CEO Al Panlilio disclosed that the Ayala-led company currently has the upper hand at 1.2 million more registered SIMs.

But while trying to bridge the gap in the numbers may be top of PLDT’s plan, the company big wig is also confident in eventually overtaking Globe in the mobile business.

Citing a “neck and neck” level of competition, Panlilio said that the objective is to “reclaim leadership position in mobile” but contemplates how to take market share from Globe.

Although the exec has no definitive timeline in mind for when it can achieve its objective, his company strives to continually improve its services while extending its reach.

Compared to the same period as last year, PLDT declares its revenue to be at Php18.5 billion in the first half of 2023, which is a 10 percent increase.

Coincidentally, both the giant telco’s gross income and total core income also increased by 3 percent at Php52.1 billion and Php17.6 billion, respectively.

Taking a majority of the consolidated services revenue at 82 percent, PLDT’s broadband and data income rose by 4 percent, equivalent to Php77.5 billion.

Fiber-only services revenue, meanwhile, increased by 11 percent to Php25.7 billion.
