Stable versions of Huawei EMUI 10.1 are slowly trickling their way to a couple of Huawei smartphones and tablets. If you can’t wait for the latest version to arrive on your phone, or you just want to try the new features before the rest of the users can, here’s how you can sign up your device for the EMUI 10.1 Beta program.
But first things first: is your device compatible with the Huawei EMUI 10.1? Check out this list of supported Huawei and Honor devices.
To check if a stable version of the Huawei EMUI 10.1 is already available for your mobile device, just go to Settings > System > System Update, and select Check for updates.
If a new EMUI 10.1 update is found, instructions for download and installation should appear. Alternatively, you may also request the latest software update through the Huawei HiCare and HiSuite apps.
As for how to join the closed beta program of EMUI 10.1 (and later versions), perform the steps listed below. Before participating in the program, it’s recommended that you make a backup copy of your documents, photos and other important files just in case the beta builds become unstable and affect your data.
Step 1: Visit the Huawei Beta-Test Download page and grab a copy of the beta app.
As of this writing two beta apps are available: one to transition from EMUI 9.1 to 10.1 and the other from 10.0 to 10.1. Choose the one that’s appropriate for your current EMUI version.
Step 2: Install and launch the Beta app.
Step 3: After accepting the terms and conditions, enter your Huawei account credentials to log in. An option is available to create a new account too.
Step 4: Once logged in, tap Personal at the bottom bar of the app.
Step 5: Select Join Project, and switch to the Available Projects tab.
Step 6: A Beta project should appear if your device is qualified and testing for the beta program is ongoing in your country. Select the project and tap on the ‘Sign Up’ button.
Now that you’ve signed up your device, all that’s left to do is wait for a Huawei over-the-air (HOTA) upgrade notification. This may take several days or longer as Huawei will have to review and approve your application first.
There’s also the possibility that the project will close without you ever getting a HOTA, because the EMUI 10.1 beta program only has a limited slot per device model and early registrants are prioritized. But if you do get a HOTA notification, you can update to the beta version via the abovementioned Settings method.
The EMUI 10.1 update introduces new features, many of which are designed to address the lack of Google Mobile Services apps and features in recently released Huawei devices. These new features include the Hey Celia voice assistant, a multi-window panel for multi-tasking, the MeeTime screen sharing and video calling application, and a cross-device photo gallery. EMUI 10.1 comes preinstalled in the flagship Huawei P40 series and the MatePad Pro tablet.
