Xiaomi is shaking up the industry again by introducing the new Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha and its new surround display.

No, it’s not like the Huawei Mate X, which is still unreleased by now. The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is not a foldable phone and is just basically your typical brick-style smartphone, but with a large display wrapped around it.

The screen extends from the left side, up to the metal strip on the back that houses the rear cameras and the branding. This let Xiaomi achieve a whopping 180% screen-to-body ratio.

But unlike the Galaxy Gold and the Mate X, you can’t unfold the device to form a bigger, tablet-like screen. The back panel acts as a secondary display for extra tasks like using the maps, controlling smart home devices, ride-hailing, and taking selfies.

To make the top and bottom bezels as thin as possible, Xiaomi removed the earpiece and used a Display Acoustic Technology, which will emit audio using vibrations right from the screen.

The edge of the display is pressure-sensitive, which shall be used to replicate the physical volume and lock/power buttons.

Unlike what happened to the Galaxy Fold, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is less fragile than it looks. The frame that holds its ludicrous screen is made of aerospace-grade alloy, with the strip holding the cameras on the back constructed from ceramic, and a sapphire glass protecting the three cameras.

As for taking selfies, you can use its whopping 108-megapixel primary camera on the back, with the wrapped-around screen acting as the viewfinder.

Xiaomi has been hyping about the 108-megapixel ISOCELL sensor that they’ve developed closely with Samsung. This uses Tetracell pixel-binning technology that outputs brighter and overall better 27-megapixel shots.

Completing its photography hardware is its 20-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto shooter.

The rest of the specs are pretty high-end stuff. It runs on the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and an advanced 4,050mAh battery module with support for Xiaomi’s 40W fast-charging technology. Oh, and of course, it will have 5G connectivity.

Since it’s basically the first of its kind, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha will come with a very premium price. This thing will have a whopping price tag of RMB19,999, which is at around Php146,900 when directly converted to Philippine pesos. It will enter small-scale production by December 2019.
