Video streaming service Netflix launches its mobile-only plan in the Philippines today. The said plan is cheaper and more competitive for only Php149 per month.
With the new plan, Netflix hopes to capture the lower-income segment in the country. In addition, the new offering is its way to combat new streaming competitions such as Disney, HBO and other traditional media outfits gearing towards the streaming space.
Since it’s a Netflix mobile-only plan, users may use it for their smartphones or tablet but not available for TV and computer viewing.
Meanwhile, user experience will still be the same as the other more expensive plans where all videos and shows are available without advertisement interruption.
Video quality, on the other hand, is only set at standard with no HD, Full HD, and 4K options. Simultaneous viewing is not available in this plan as it’s limited to one user only.
The mobile-only plan was first tested last year in India for US$4 (~Php200). During that time, Netflix was not sure whether the said plan will proceed as a product offering. However, in January 2020, the company made it available in other Asian countries before coming to the Philippines.
Netflix pointed out that the Philippines is a mobile-first country where majority of the users are on their smartphones watching an average of 3.3 hours a day online.
The Netflix mobile-only plan is on top of the existing plans which are Basic (Php369), Standard (Php469), and Premium (Php549). Related
