Huawei shipped 230 million smartphones at the end of the year according to Sina Technology News citing Huawei CEO Richard Yu during an internal meeting.

The shipment is notably lower than the 270 million target previously disclosed by Huawei to the European media in October.

Despite a much lower quantity, the estimated shipment still shows Huawei’s expansive growth this year. In 2018, the company shipped around 200 million smartphones, which is 30 million less than the currently estimated shipment.

Reports show that in October, Huawei has already shipped 200 million smartphones. At that time, the company was selling an average of 5 million smartphones per week.

Huawei’s growth is still impressive considering it was a rough year for the company because of the US ban. Huawei engaged in a trade war with the US government prompting US-owned companies, including Google, to stop doing business with them.

Because of the ban, some of their devices, including the Mate 30 series do not have Google services. The ban made it difficult for Huawei to sell its smartphones to markets outside of China where Google’s Android is the primary operating system.

In the Philippines, Huawei has felt the effects of the ban. According to research conducted by Counterpoint, Huawei’s sales declined by 26% year-over-year.

The research pointed out the US-China trade war as the main reason for the decrease. This is despite Huawei still selling smartphones running Android OS in the country. These smartphones include the midrange Huawei Nova 5T and the entry-level Huawei Y6s.
