lg-batteries-on-iphone

While the highly-anticipated iPhone 8 is still running around the rumor mill, we’re already seeing a hint on the iPhone 9. In a report from the Korea Economic Daily, it’s said that Apple taps LG to produce L-shaped batteries for the iPhone 9.

LG Chem, the company’s arm in subject, has been chosen by Apple to exclusively provide the L-shaped batteries on the iPhone 9. This battery implementation is also being rumored in the upcoming iPhone 8. This new battery design is said to help Apple increase the capacity and shorten charging times without greatly affecting the device’s overall size. The bizarre shape will allow other hardwares to sit right next to it, making it space-efficient.

This move from the Cupertino giant comes to a surprise as they usually take the “multi-vendor” approach when sourcing components for their products. This allows them to lower the cost. Apple usually gets their battery supplies from ATL in China, Murata Manufacturing in Japan, Samsung SDI and LG Chem.

LG Chem was able to win the exclusivity because of their said focus on the L-shaped battery design. Other suppliers like Samsung SDI still have their eyes on the traditional, rectangular batteries. Also, based on a report from CNBC, LG already invested “hundred of billions of Korean won” that would help ramp up the mass production of the said battery early next year.

If the reports were true, then it looks like Apple’s major competitors are ironically getting big bucks from them. If you recall, we’ve reported earlier this month that Samsung is also investing billions in manufacturing iPhone OLED displays.
