We’re still far away from having a smartphone battery that lasts for a week, but the industry is trying to compensate by improving charging speeds.
The fastest market-available charger we have now is at 65W, which we saw on devices like the OPPO Find X2 Pro and Realme X50 Pro 5G. But now, it appears that Xiaomi is literally doubling it down by coming up with a 120W fast charger.
Xiaomi is yet to confirm the existence of a 120W fast charger. Albeit, a short 9-second hands-on video — possibly taken inside a factory or research facility — reveals the actual unit.
With a model name MDY-12-ED, this charger is unsurprisingly large, almost the size of a MacBook Pro 16-inch 96W charger.
To achieve the 120W output, the charger has 20V of power, the highest output that a USB Type-C Power Delivery supports — at 6A. This could theoretically provide a full 100% charge on a 4,000mAh battery in 15 minutes or less.
The best part is, the Xiaomi 120W charger is really flexible. It can support charging for as low as 15W that you can use on your mobile accessories, and up to 120W for your laptop, and possibly, future smartphones that will support this new standard.
Other than wired charging, Xiaomi is also making progress in the wireless- charging with its new 30W fast wireless charging technology. Hopefully, this new Xiaomi 120W fast charger actually makes it to the market, unlike the the 100W Super Charge Turbo that they demoed back in April 2019.
