During the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun stated that they’re aiming to launch 10 smartphones next year that are equipped with 5G connectivity.
The best part is, these 5G Xiaomi smartphones will not all be flagship releases. This means that we might see midrange and other affordable devices to come with this latest, ultra-fast wireless technology.
Lei Jun said that 4G smartphones will probably not sell very well next year. An evidence to that is how the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G model is selling very well in China that the supply can barely keep up with the demand.
The CEO is also urging ISPs and telecoms to be more aggressive in making 5G connectivity available to the market.
Besides the emergence of 5G smartphones like Vivo NEX 3 and Samsung Galaxy A90, we’re also seeing SoC manufacturers that are integrating 5G antennas on their chipsets. This could ultimately result in more attainable 5G devices.
But for now, we only have flagship chipsets like the Kirin 990 from Huawei and Exynos 980 from Samsung that comes with built-in 5G. It won’t be long till budget and midrange chipsets will have this feature too.

For now, let’s just wait and see what this latest technology, and the tech brand that are pioneering it has in store for us. And from what it looks like, Xiaomi is at the forefront of this evolution.
