We’ve seen foldable smartphones hit the market last year. This 2020, we expect it to go more mainstream, and Xiaomi appears to be at the forefront of it.
Xiaomi is working on new and unique smartphone designs. This is proven by the leaked patent details that the company filed to the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office last month, which was just approved on January 10.
The company filed for two patent applications. The first one features a device with a triple-sided screen. The display wraps from the front, left side, up to the back.
We have a triple-camera setup on the rear. There is no visible selfie camera on the front. Either Xiaomi will use an under-display camera technology, or users will have to utilize the primary cameras on the back and use the rear display as the viewfinder when taking selfies.
The patent filing didn’t fully disclose if it’s going to be a foldable design. But since it looks similar to the Huawei Mate X, we can safely speculate that it is.
The next one looks slightly different. It still has a bezel-less design. But instead of the screen stretching on the side up to the back, it goes over the top of the device.
With that, we can expect this to be a foldable phone that folds vertically, just like what we saw on the new Motorola Razr 2019.
If you remember, Xiaomi has already teased its own foldable phone technology almost a year ago. Hopefully, they were able to come up with a market-ready product 12 months later.
And knowing Xiaomi, we expect it to be priced competitively. Hopefully way cheaper than the ludicrous price of the Galaxy Fold here in the Philippines.
