The mobile market in the Philippines is no longer a duopoly according to internet analytics firm Ookla, which cited DITO Telecommunity’s entry and expansion as disruptive enough to break the domination of Globe Telecom and Smart-PLDT.
In a recent study published by Ookla, DITO Telecommunity also made a significant impact on the 4G and 5G availability and performance in the Philippines. Data from its insights tool Speedtest Intelligence showed that the country’s 4G availability improved from 80.6 percent in the first quarter of 2021 to 84.8 in the same period this year.

Ookla further found that DITO had the highest 4G availability at 91.2 percent in Q1 2022, with Globe and Smart trailing behind at 84.9 percent and 83.8 percent, respectively. Ookla also saw the country’s 5G availability almost doubling year-on-year, from 9.4 percent in Q1 2021 to 18.1 percent in Q1 2022.
Besides DITO, regulatory changes such as eased right of way rules are attributed as factors behind the improved overall 4G and 5G availability in the country.
As of June 2022, DITO has almost 9 million subscribers and aims to reach 12 million by yearend.
