Smartphone makers getting caught using DSLR photos to highlight and advertise the camera capabilities of their smartphones has become so common that it’s not really surprising anymore. Samsung got caught. Huawei got caught. And now, Huawei has been caught doing it… again.
In its effort to inspire users to create amazing photos with its smartphones such as the P40 Pro, Huawei promoted on Weibo a photography contest by posting a compilation video of photos that were supposedly “taken with Huawei smartphones.”

One Weibo user with a sharp eye, however, noticed that some photos look familiar. After some digging, he found one of the original photos at photo-sharing platform 500px. The platform attributes the photo to photographer Su Tie and shows it was shot using a Nikon D850, a high-res DSLR camera with a hefty price of $3,000.

Huawei has since expressed its apology on Weibo, explaining that an oversight by an editor caused the inclusion of the DSLR photo by mistake. To be fair, the company does have smartphones with spectacular cameras, arguably the best in the industry, that don’t require fake photos to embellish their camera capabilities. Huawei really ought to be more careful and avoid repeating these kinds of blunder.
