Now that wearable devices are getting popular, it’s time for MediaTek to offer a fitting system-on-a-chip solution for device makers. It’s the new MediaTek MT2601.
The MediaTek MT2601 features a 1.2GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 (the same CPU found in the Snapdragon 400 series that power the ZenWatch and other Android Wear devices), Mali-400 graphics and up to qHD display resolution. It is also compatible with external sensors and wireless modems to extend its usability.
Whereas the MT6795 and other offerings promise premium performance at a lower price, the MediaTek MT2601 is focused on power efficiency and size. Compared with the competition, the chip makes use of fewer components in order to reduce the size of its circuit board. This leads to thinner wearables.
The MediaTek MT2601 is already at the mass production stage. Android Wear devices powered by this chip should be appearing soon.
