The smartphone industry is expected to be dominated by 5G smartphones this year but on the design side, we expect some radical changes both on the next-gen iPhone and Android phones.

Apple is tipped to bring the first major redesign on its smartphone lineup since 2017 to the iPhone 12. In the past few years, Apple has continuously tweaked its smartphone lineup with the shift to larger displays and new rear camera pattern. The iPhone X, XS Max, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro readily come to mind. The models all adopt a similar design style as a result of Apple’s new design cycle every three years.

However, there are indications that the incoming iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will adopt major design changes when they get launched. According to leaks and rumours, the new iPhones for 2020 are expected to feature flat metal edges  against the round edges that have been utilized on flagship iPhones beginning from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus back in 2014.

The design upgrade on the iPhone 12 is said to be prominent when viewed from a close range. However, for a distance, the Apple iPhone 12 will probably look just like its predecessors.

For Android phones, two main design styles are expected to hold in 2020. One of such design styles is the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20 designs. We should see a good number of Android phones adopt the design trend which includes an hole-punch display and multi-camera setup housed in a rectangular or square module.

Another design style that could get adopted, albeit, in a limited pattern, is the foldable design. The year is just two months off and we have seen the Galaxy Z Flip and Huawei Mate Xs. More foldable phones are likely to come in 2020. We predict a number of them will tilt towards the Galaxy Z Flip with its clamshell design than the Mate Xs style.

All the expected design styles don’t elicit the same level of excitement as the futuristic Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha. Xiaomi recently sent a couple of working prototypes of the Mi Mix Alpha foldable phone to popular tech YouTubers. We bring you the review video of one of the reviewers, Marques Brownlee (MKBHD).

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha features a spectacular display design where the screen wraps around the frame at the sides. This is made possible with the use of flexible OLED panels that was pioneered by Samsung. Even though Samsung had first used flexible OLEDs, the Mix Alpha takes things to an all new level with the way the screen wraps around the sides of the phone. It also stretches all the way across the back. The design is undoubtedly one of the best smartphone designs we’ve seen in years.

If you are looking to pick up the Mix Alpha when it goes commercial, you may have to wait a while longer as Xiaomi is said to be encountering some difficulties in the mass production efforts.  Official pricing and availability of the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha are not yet available as of the moment.
