The industry’s goal of ultimately removing smartphone bezels is almost achieved, thanks to the advancements in under-display camera technology.

In fact, we’ve seen Xiaomi and OPPO teasing this new technology way back in June 2019. It’s not clear if the devices they showcased were prototypes or just a rendered presentation of how the companies expect the technology to work.

But now, almost a year later, a rumored patent filing by Xiaomi reveals how its upcoming under-screen camera smartphone will work.

With this technology, the camera can be placed on the far left or in the middle. This will give Xiaomi the option to design their smartphones differently.

But the question is, how will the technology work?

As per the patent, when the selfie camera is in use, the display area in front of it will be transparent. Thus revealing the camera beneath. The screen goes back to normal when the front-facing camera is not in use.

Clearly, the main innovation here is not on the camera itself, but on the display. Flexible displays on devices like the Galaxy Z Flip and Mate Xs are only starting to hit the mainstream and yet we’re already starting to see another huge innovation in this department.

As time goes by, we wonder what other components that engineers can hide behind the screen. Quad front-facing cameras? Large speakers? We’ll see.
